Understanding Fence Post Cracking: The Process of Checking
Introduction:
Concerns about cracked fence posts are common amongst homeowners.
Explanation of “Checking”
Fence posts don’t typically crack or split, but undergo a process called “checking”.

“Checking” is a natural result of lumber seasoning or drying out, particularly noticeable in round or square wood timbers.

Insights from USDA Research:

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin, has extensively studied this phenomenon.

According to USDA Bulletin #1187, round items are more challenging to season due to the presence of heartwood and sapwood, leading to stresses and the development of V-shaped checks.

Understanding the Drying Process:

When a full round or square timber dries, the exterior surface (sapwood) shrinks faster than the inner heartwood, resulting in checks.

This checking is not technically a split or crack but rather a natural adjustment of the wood during the drying process.

Comparing Different Timber Forms:
Checking is less visible but still possible in boards and planks due to more even drying from being cut from larger trees and sawn on four sides.
Assurance of Strength:

Laboratory and field tests indicate that the natural checking of full round materials does not impact their strength.

Users of full round timbers or dimensional members can be confident that checking, though likely to occur, will not weaken the structural integrity of the fence posts.

Depending on the type of fence you choose, installations typically occur 3-6 weeks after the contract is signed and we receive your deposit.

Most Installations Are Completed in 1-2 Days.

In most communities, there is no law requiring you to give your neighbor the good side. However, it is considered a courtesy to do so.

We recommend that you install 1-2 feet inside your property line so that the installation and any maintainance can be done on your property.

That depends on how tall the fence is and what city or town you live in. Some require a permit for fences over a certain height, and others require them for all fences. The building department in your town issues permits if required.

It is not required to consult or notify your neighbor before you install a fence, however, it is considered a good practice.

Typical depth is 3′.

We install fences in most Metrowest communities. Check our our service area here.SERVICE AREA
